Those who want to delve even deeper into the settings of the Multiband X6 can do so using an additional advanced settings window, which can be opened by clicking on the gear icon at the bottom of the macro controls. In addition to the compression modes, the plug-in also features an advanced setting that allows it to function in situations where it is desirable to increase the dynamic range of signals rather than reduce it. Devious Machines says that while the multi-band X6 is capable of reproducing sounds associated with iconic compressor designs of the past, its sonic palette expands far more and is capable of producing its own unique, modern sound. Three different compression modes are available to choose from: Smooth, Crunch and Punch, each said to have its own musical character and provide varying degrees of aggressiveness, with the latter option adding a little saturation to loud peaks. Intelligent gain compensation and automatic level matching help maintain a constant signal level while adjusting more detailed settings for each frequency band. The plug-in is capable of supporting up to six compression bands, but provides users with some useful features, such as macro control and auto thresholding, that allow them to quickly apply some processing at all frequencies before delving into the individual settings for each band. The result, Multiband X6, aims to make multiband dynamics processing more accessible and enjoyable, while still delivering the full range of features and sound quality demanded by serious audio professionals. Realizing that many users are discouraged by the potential complexity of a multiband compressor, Devious Machines set out to create a plug-in that could redefine the possibilities.
